About the painting, by artist Barry Novis

The fine art print on offer is a replica of one of my paintings, a portrait of David Bowie which I painted at the same time as my minimalist John Lennon, using that same philosophy of "less is more". With someone as chameleonic as Bowie, I wanted to strip away the costumes and the glitter to find the striking architecture of his face. He was the ultimate individual, and I wanted this painting to feel as sharp and modern as his music.

One of the greatest challenges was his eyes. As many know, David had different coloured eyes, which gave him that otherworldly alien look. Trying to translate that into a high-contrast, black-and-white study was a real test. I had to rely entirely on the way the light hit the pupils to suggest that famous, mismatched gaze. If you look closely, you can see that slight "off-kilter" magic that made him so unique.

Growing up in post-war Britain, Bowie was the one who told us it was okay to be different. He didn't simply join the music scene; he reinvented it every few years. From the folk-rock of Space Oddity to the glam of Ziggy Stardust and the sleek pop brilliance of the Let’s Dance era, he was always ten steps ahead of everyone else. He was a massive influence on my generation, proving that art and music could be a total, immersive experience.

I used the bold red background to echo the China Girl era - a time when he was a global powerhouse, yet still retained that cool, detached mystery. By using minimal marks, I wanted to capture the Starman in his purest form. He was a man of a thousand faces, but in this light, you can see the legend that tied them all together.
